Phase Transitions in Multicomponent Systems
Consider a system with n components (different types of molecules) with r phases in equilibrium. The state of each phase is defined by P, T and then (n− 1) concentration variables in each phase. The phase equilibrium at given P, T is defined by the equality of n chemical potentials between the r phases. Thus there are n(r − 1) constraints on (n− 1)r + 2 variables. This gives the Gibbs phase rul...
متن کاملPhase diagrams and lipid domains in multicomponent lipid bilayer mixtures.
Understanding the phase behavior of biological membranes is helped by the study of more simple systems. Model membranes that have as few as 3 components exhibit complex phase behavior that can be well described, providing insight for biological membranes. A number of different studies are in agreement on general findings for some compositional phase diagrams, in particular, those that model the...
متن کاملMulticomponent Multidimensional Signals
In this brief paper, we extend the notion of multicomponent signal into multiple dimensions. A definition for multidimensional instantaneous bandwidth is presented and used to develop criteria for determining the multicomponent nature of a signal. We demonstrate application of the criteria by testing the validity of a multicomponent interpretation for a complicated nonstationary texture image.
متن کاملPhase Diagrams for Systems Containing Hyperbranched Polymers
Hyperbranched polymers show an outstanding potential for applications ranging from chemistry over nanotechnology to pharmacy. In order to take advantage of this potential, the underlying phase behaviour must be known. From the thermodynamic point of view, the modelling of these phase diagrams is quite challenging, because the thermodynamic properties depend on the architecture of the hyperbranc...
متن کاملDeveloping grain boundary diagrams for multicomponent alloys
Impurity-based, premelting-like, intergranular films (IGFs, a common type of grain boundary complexion) can form in various materials and influence sintering, creep, and microstructure development. A thermodynamic framework is presented to forecast the formation and stability of these premelting-like grain boundary complexions (a.k.a. interfacial “phases” that are thermodynamically two dimensio...
